IEP algae-based water treatment facilityIEP INSTALLS NEW ALGAE-BASED WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY: A BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL-FREE PROCESS

Inland Empire Paper Co. (IEP) is very pleased to announce the installation of an algae-based technology representing a unique biological solution for effluent water treatment. This chemical-free water treatment system was developed and patented by Montana-based AlgEvolve for the removal of phosphorus, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and other pollutants.

IEP will begin operations on a 100,000 gallon per day demonstration-scale system in October 2012. This algae technology has demonstrated significant advantages over other systems, such as chemical precipitation, as it eliminates the use of chemicals and chemical sludge. Rather, it is a carbon sequestration process, producing oxygen and algae byproducts. The algae byproduct is a commodity that can be used for biofuels, bioplastics, feed stock, pharmaceuticals and numerous other products.
